Frequently asked questions

The HSE website contains a comprehensive FAQ on Portable Appliance Testing found here.

Do I receive a PAT licence when I complete this training?
There is no such thing as a license for Portable Appliance Testing in the UK.

The term ‘licence’ suggests a document issued from a governmental or other constituted authority to undertake Portable Appliance Testing. No such authority exists; there are only accrediting bodies and training providers who operate independently of the HSE or any other government organisation.

Successful candidates do receive a PAT certificate, sometimes referred to as a PAT ticket; this provides evidence that the candidate has completed training and is certified to use the equipment as outlined on the PAT certification.

Course description

Portable Appliance Testing training enables candidates to test and certify appliances as electrically safe as required by The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

PAT Testing training course participants will learn portable appliance testing for 230v and 110v equipment. PAT training explores features of the kit, equipment that should be subject to testing, electrical principles and regulations that must be adhered to when undertaking PAT testing on both public and private sites. Knowledge of frequency and intervals between PAT testing of equipment, correct labelling and basic calibration techniques will be gained through PAT training courses.

Following PAT qualification, candidates can go on to sell their services as a PAT tester. This should be subject to adequate insurance.

Our trainer assessors are able to offer advice on suitable PAT testing equipment for clients who wish to purchase their own. It is advisable for a company’s own testing equipment to be incorporated into the practical aspect of the PAT course.
