About the Apprenticeship
This timber qualification is a brand new qualification launched in 2013, developed by the industry to meet the needs of merchants who require a specific timber and panel products merchanting qualification for their employees.
It is a work based programme that provides hands on experience and knowledge to understand timber and panel products and their uses, underpinned by skills that merchants require to buy, sell and manage stock including customer service.
The full qualification can be achieved on the apprentice programme, but learners age 19+ can achieve the NVQ only, which is the part of the qualification that demonstrates practical skills. Employers might prefer the NVQ only route for employees who have acquired significant timber and panel product knowledge by virtue of several years’ experience working in a branch.
The course covers
- timber and panel products and their uses
- purchase timber and timber based products
- sell timber and timber based products
- customer service skills
- stock and logistics operations
- health & safety in the workplace
The Timber Merchanting Apprenticeship is comprised of a number of recognised qualifications as well as the training provided by the employer on the job.
