Frequently asked questions
- Is there a minimum age requirement for completing Moffett training?
- Lift Truck operators in the UK must be over the minimum school leaving age (except in docks where they must be at least 18 years old).
With the exception of Lift Truck operators, there is no minimum age outlined in any UK legislation for other plant operators.
You can find out more here: HSE Workplace Transport FAQ.
- Is there an upper age limit for completing Moffett driver training?
- Do I receive a Moffett licence when I complete this training?
There is no such thing as a license as such, for any piece of plant machinery in the UK.
The term ‘licence’ suggests a document issued from a governmental or other constituted authority to operate a Moffett Truck. No such authority exists; there are only accrediting bodies and training providers who operate independently of the HSE or any other government organisation.
Successful candidates do receive a certificate and photo ID card, sometimes referred to as a Moffett ticket; this provides evidence that the candidate has completed a Moffett Truck course and is certified to use the equipment as outlined on the Moffett certification.
- Can I use this training to drive a Moffett Truck on the public highway?
To operate a Moffett, whether on the public highway or not, the operator should be properly trained and certified.
Public highways in the UK are governed by the DVLA; the same rules apply for operating plant machinery on the road as with operating a different type of motor vehicle.
- The vehicle must be properly taxed.
- A valid insurance policy must be held.
- The driver must hold a valid road driving licence.

Moffett is actually a brand name commonly used in the UK to refer to Vehicle Mounted Forklift Trucks, similar to the way in which the term ‘HIAB’ is used to refer to Lorry Loader Cranes.
As implied these types of Forklift mount to a lorry, normally on the rear of the vehicle and are used by LGV drivers where the goods recipient may not have a Forklift Truck with which to unload pallets.
The Moffett Truck is mounted to the vehicle with the use of a manufacturer supplied Mounting Kit. The Forks disect support brackets fitted to the underside of the lorry. The lifting mechanism of the Moffett is then used to raise the truck into position before it is secured using transport chains.
The operator continues to man the Moffett Truck until it is securely in position aboard the receiving vehicle before dismounting. The Moffett Truck can be dismounted in under 60 seconds for operation.
Moffett Trucks are a 3 wheeled Forklift design. A lone wheel on the rear of the truck means that they are agile vehicles capable of operating on different types of terrain. Some models offer 4-way steering ie. forward, reverse, side-to-side. Using a ‘series’ steer system each of the three wheels can turn 90 degrees effecting this added movement. In this mode the Moffett Truck becomes ideal for transporting long loads such as wood beams.
A number of designs are available utilising a variety of reach systems including Moving Mast, Reach Fork, Telemount, Static Mast, Pantograph Reach.
Didac Moffett Forklift training Instructors are registered with ITSSAR (Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register). Didac’s accreditation to ITSSAR is assessed annually and subject to the standards outlined by the body.
Following a successful assessment of competence, candidates are issued with a photo ID card Moffett licence as well as a Moffett certificate.
A Moffett license does not technically have an expiry date, subsequently a Moffett certificate and photo ID card issued by Didac will not include an expiry date. The Health and Safety Executive website recommends that workplace transport personnel should refresh their Moffett licence training every 3 to 5 years.
For reference during Moffett Mounty training, the manufacturers’ instructions for the Lift Truck should be made available to the Didac trainer assessor. Instructor demonstrations, exercises under observation and assessment of competence comprise the practical side of Manitou training. Moffett driver training candidates will also undertake a theory assessment to demonstrate knowledge.
Vehicle Mounted training can be delivered on-site throughout the UK. Moffett Mounty training cost will depend on the location of client premises. Certificate and photo ID card Manitou licence are included in the price of training.
